2026 Proof of Custody. Published by Onramp Bitcoin. Editorial Independence.PrivacyTermsproofofcustody.io
Situation

Our company holds bitcoin on the balance sheet. What does the custody need to look like?

It depends on who can approve a movement and whether there is a record of it. An entity's failure mode is a single officer with a personal wallet, or a trading account at the venue it bought on. The arrangement needs named authorisers, more than one approval to move funds, segregation from the provider's assets, and a succession path if the founder leaves. Multi-institution custody and qualified custodians are built for this; collaborative multisig works with a written signer policy that most companies do not maintain.

What decides it
  • Authorisation controls and an audit trail
  • Segregation from the provider's own assets
  • Succession if a signer leaves
  • Whether the company trades

Which custody models fit, by the published rules

Fit engine rules 0.1 (1 Nov 2026), with this situation's inputs preset. Adjust the inputs to your own case. Proof of Custody is published by Onramp Bitcoin, which appears here where its custody model fits and is scored by the same methodology as every other platform.

Collaborative multisig
partial · 55

Fits only where the provider documents an assisted inheritance path the recoverer can follow with support; otherwise the arrangement becomes a puzzle box the day you are gone.

  • The provider's failure does not take your keys.

Recovery: Locate the devices and seed backups, run a signing ceremony with the provider's key; or, where the provider documents an assisted inheritance path, follow that path with the provider.

Excluded by the rules: Self-managed multi-vendor multisig (Recovery floor: this model requires the recoverer to run a hardware wallet and handle a seed phrase, and the person you named cannot be expected to.); Single-signature hardware wallet (Recovery floor: this model requires the recoverer to run a hardware wallet and handle a seed phrase, and the person you named cannot be expected to.)

These are custody models that fit the situation described, by Proof of Custody's published rules, version 0.1 (1 Nov 2026). They are not a recommendation to buy, sell, move or hold anything, and not legal, tax or estate advice.

Tests to run on any provider you shortlist

Company treasury with board reporting duties

A company holds bitcoin on its balance sheet and the board requires oversight of who can move it and a record of what happened.

  • A complete authorisation trail showing who approved each movement and when
  • Bitcoin held separately from operating accounts
  • Balance and transaction reporting the finance team can pull on demand
  • Approval thresholds configurable to the company's own delegation of authority
