2026 Proof of Custody. Published by Onramp Bitcoin. Editorial Independence.PrivacyTermsproofofcustody.io
Situation

I own a bitcoin ETF and want real bitcoin without self-custody. What are the options?

It depends on what the ETF is failing to give you. Shares in a brokerage are easy to inherit and easy to trade, and the bitcoin sits at a custodian you did not choose, with most US spot ETFs sharing one. Owning directly without holding keys means a qualified custodian or multi-institution custody: segregated, titled to you, withdrawable. The switch is a taxable sale in a taxable account and a transfer question inside an IRA. Read the ETF custody concentration data first; the question is whether you want the same custodian as the fund, or none that can act alone.

What decides it
  • Custodian concentration behind the fund
  • Tax on the switch
  • Whether you need to trade often
  • Who can move funds at the destination

Which custody models fit, by the published rules

Fit engine rules 0.1 (1 Nov 2026), with this situation's inputs preset. Adjust the inputs to your own case. Proof of Custody is published by Onramp Bitcoin, which appears here where its custody model fits and is scored by the same methodology as every other platform.

Collaborative multisig
fits · 80
  • Long horizons favour structures that do not depend on one party staying solvent and competent.
  • The provider's failure does not take your keys.

Recovery: Locate the devices and seed backups, run a signing ceremony with the provider's key; or, where the provider documents an assisted inheritance path, follow that path with the provider.

Multi-institution custody
fits · 80
  • Long horizons favour structures that do not depend on one party staying solvent and competent.
  • No single institution's failure reaches the coins.
  • Institutions, but no one of them can act alone.

Recovery: Identity and authority documents to the institutions; no device, seed or ceremony on the heir's side.

Tests to run on any provider you shortlist

Family office moving off an exchange

A family office holds bitcoin on a trading venue and wants professional custody without adding operational work internally.

  • Client bitcoin is segregated from the provider's own assets and from other clients' assets
  • More than one party must authorise any movement of funds
  • Insurance, if claimed, names what it covers and what it excludes, with a limit and an as-of date
  • Independent examination of custody operations, such as a SOC 2 Type II report, available to the client
